1 Molecular Biology Characteristics of PSMA
1.1 Structural Features and Regulatory Pathways
PSMA is a 100 kDa type II transmembrane glycoprotein secreted by prostate epithelial cells, which is overexpressed in almost all prostate cancers and their metastases2-3, particularly in poorly differentiated, metastatic, and castration-resistant prostate cancer cells, where its expression increases even further2-3. Its expression level is over 1000 times higher than in normal tissues2-3, and it correlates positively with the aggressiveness of the tumor4, making it an ideal target for the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer.
