Cases of upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) are broadly classified into those caused by varices and those caused by other factors. The latter cause highlighted in these guidelines mainly refers to bleeding from gastroduodenal ulcers (peptic ulcers).
The age-adjusted morbidity and mortality rates in patients with peptic ulcers are declining in both Western and Eastern countries. Over the past 30 years, the global age-adjusted morbidity and mortality rates per 100,000 individuals have decreased by 31% and 59%, respectively (i.e., from 143.4 and 7.4 in 1990 to 99.4 and 3.0 in 2019, respectively).
